Uploading work: formats, sizes and quality
Which file formats Raumiva accepts, how large a file may be, and what happens to your images automatically when you upload them.
Which formats work
Images: JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF. That covers painting, drawing, print and photography.
Video: MP4 and WebM. Audio: MP3, WAV and OGG. Three-dimensional objects: GLB and GLTF.
For security reasons Raumiva does not accept SVG or HTML files. Both can carry program code that would run in your visitors' browsers.
How large a file may be
Up to 25 MB per file. For photographed or scanned artwork that is generous — even a high-resolution scan usually stays well below it.
If your file is larger, export it once with slightly stronger compression. A visible loss of quality is practically unheard of at that point.
What happens automatically on upload
Your images are converted to WebP and brought down to at most 2048 pixels along their longest edge. A small 512-pixel preview is generated as well, for overviews and thumbnails.
This is so your gallery loads quickly, including over mobile data. Very large originals would otherwise dominate the loading time — and long loading times cost you both visitors and visibility on Google.
Your uploaded file remains the basis throughout; the conversion only affects the version delivered to the browser.
What makes a good source image
Photograph or scan as squarely and as evenly lit as you can, and crop away the frame and the background. In the 3D view your work hangs on a wall — a room visible behind it stands out immediately.
The aspect ratio of your file determines how the work appears on the wall. A cropped image therefore hangs cropped.
Common questions
Which image formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF for images, MP4 and WebM for video, MP3, WAV and OGG for audio, and GLB and GLTF for 3D objects. SVG and HTML files are excluded for security reasons.
How large may a file be?
Up to 25 MB per file. Images are automatically brought down to at most 2048 pixels along their longest edge and converted to WebP on upload, so the gallery loads quickly.
Does my image lose quality?
For display in the browser it is limited to 2048 pixels and compressed. On a screen there is nothing to see — that resolution already exceeds what most monitors can show.
